Tourism of İzmir

Having been the host of many civilizations in past, İzmir's

  • Soil,
  • Seawater,
  • Shadow of its monument trees,

Give the fragrance of its history, culture and hospitality at every moment of everyday.

No matter what language you speak in İzmir, the one language that is held high in its regard by all is the language of love and hospitality.

You can get to İzmir via land, sea and air transport. It’s where cruise ships started heading for especially in recent years, a candidate to be a popular tourism spot and a brand city.

Having almost reached the population of 4 million as of 2015 July, in the light of the fact that it was discovered by people hundreds of years ago, it can be said that the first tourism movement of Turkey began with İzmir, with a lot of more potential tourist attractions to be discovered beyond the already present ones.

İzmir still possesses the fertile soil that inspired Alexander the Great in his dream to relocate the city center from Bayraklı to Kadifekale.

Districts of İzmir are respectively; Aliağa, Balçova, Bayındır, Bayraklı, Bergama, Beydağ, Bornova, Buca, Çeşme, Çiğli, Dikili, Foça, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karabağlar, Karaburun, Karşıyaka, Kemalpaşa, Kınık, Kiraz, Konak, Menderes, Menemen, Narlıdere, Ödemiş, Seferihisar, Selçuk, Tire, Torbalı and Urla.

İzmir is sunny 300 days in a year, but its rainy days are something else. People of İzmir are fortunate enough to be enjoying the view of rain, and the fragrance it creates as it drops on dry soil.

In Turkey, İzmir is the only city associated with charm.

With its 8500 years old history, pleasant climate, and discovered and yet to be discovered tourism supply; İzmir is one of the strongest spots of our country's tourism sector.

Tepekule, the oldest historical site that has reached our times from the Western history, was discovered in İzmir. And a new historical artifact is found in Agora every day.

The oldest known bridge in history, is the one above River Meles.

In today's world where the concept of slow food is getting more and more popular against fast food;

Aegean cuisine that is made with all kinds of herbs from İzmir, such as şevket-i bostan, artichoke, radish sprouts, sea beans and dandelion form the soul of the culture of modern gastronomy.

The lucky people of İzmir believe that;

  • Urban tourism,
  • Health tourism including medical and thermal tourism,
  • Religious tourism,
  • Cultural tourism,
  • Fair and congress tourism,
  • Youth tourism,
  • Accessible tourism,
  • Agro tourism,
  • Nature, tableland and adventure tourism activities can take place in their city, and they are always eager to help in the development of their city's tourism sector in whatever possible way they can.

İzmir, with its opportunities for;

  • Shopping,
  • Health,
  • Education, feels the advantage of being a metropolis.

As well as feeling the advantages of being a metropolis, İzmir offers its residents the opportunity of being able to swim the wonderful coasts of Çeşme, Seferihisar, Urla (Klazomenai) and Foça, all of which are 1 hour away at most.

İzmir is also one of the rare cities that provide the opportunity of being able to reach the heart of the nature; tablelands, ski resorts, amazing sceneries, silence and green seas in an hour's drive.

On the other hand, İzmir, whose foundation is based on the energy that people who have been living together regardless of their historical, religious, lingual or ethnic differences create, provides the opportunity for its resident to visit many religious centers including mosques, churches, synagogues, Birgi and the house of the Virgin Mary.

Seferihisar CittaSlow is a popular spot for the surfing tourism of Alaçatı, which takes its name from the Alacaat Tribe that migrated to this region in 14th century. With taking only 30-45 minutes’ drive away from İzmir, it provides one of the many unmatched experiences of İzmir.

While İzmir provides the opportunity to its residents and visitors to stroll through Kordon, it also allows them to swim and recieve physiotherapy in the therapeutic thermal water of Agememnon hot springs located in Balçova within 15 minutes’ drive.

A little further away, in Ilıca, Çeşme one of the rare seas in the world that combine both thermal water and sea water is located, and is a great place for people who would like to swim in both thermal and sea water simultaneously.

The center of music therapy Bergama Akslepion is also quite accessible from İzmir.

Hence, you can feel the sanative hands of the medical doctor Akslepios who is known to be the father of Hippocrates.

One of the words whose meaning is presented as a prerequisite of a healthy life, "hygiene", was coined in Izmir. The word hygiene is derived from Akslepios's daughter "Hygeia".

Bergama is the birth place of the symbol of medicine in the shape of a snake. Parchment paper was first discovered in Bergama.

Tourism potential of İzmir's center and districts is too rich to count one by one.

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Temple of Artemis, is located in Ephesus.

Şirince village in Selçuk is a popular destination for wine enthusiasts.  Next to the Ancient City of Ephesus, other historical and touristic values such as the House of the Virgin Mary, Bassilica of St. John, Seven Sleepers, İsa Bey Mosque and Metropolis are located.

Urla Bademler Village is one of the rare villages in which delicious herbs are both grown and put up for sale in their habitats.

On the other hand; Bozdağ and Gölcük which are parts of Ödemiş are heaven on earth.

With its ever-increasing fame and houses that has never been driven a nail into, Birgi, which used to be the capital of Aydınoğulları Principality is a noble monumental city that enthralls its visitors.

A tourism potential that is historically valuable and beautiful beyond comparison is also available in İzmir's center.

Homer has written his famous work "Iliad" in İzmir.

The world's largest open-air market, Kemeraltı is in İzmir.

Kestanepazarı, Hisarönü, Kuyumcular Çarşısı (Jewelers Bazaar), Synagogue Street are some of the many markets in Kemeraltı.

Other places to visit in İzmir include Konak Square, Elevator, Alsancak, Karşıyaka, Kadifekale, the Clock Tower, Kültürpark, Uşakizade Mansion and Elhamra Theater.

Kültürpark, the oldest fair of Turkey is a milestone for İzmir in the formation of its identity.

The traditional fair of İzmir have been moved to the grounds of İzmir Fair.

The new ground called "İzmir Fair" is only 8km away from the airport.

İzmir Fair has 330.000 m2 of area, 119.000 m2 of open and closed exhibition space, 12.000 m2 of Fair Street, a congress room with 500-1500-2200 people capacity, 16.000 m2 of cafe and restaurants.

The first zoo of Turkey was established in İzmir Kültürpark in 1937, later on this place was moved to Doğal Yaşam Parkı (Natural Life Park) that has an area of 425 m2 and is located in Sasalı, Çiğli.

On the other hand; İzmir Kuş Cenneti (İzmir Bird Sanctuary) spreads across 8 thousand hectares of field through Çamaltı Tuzlası.

Teleferik, located in Balçova, has picnic sites with unmatched views.

440 group A and 10 group C travel agencies are active in İzmir.

İzmir's nearly 55 thousand bed capacity gives cues to the representatives of the tourism sector indicating the need to increase the diversification of touristic activities.
